Paul Scholes snubs Scott McTominay when naming 'the best player on the pitch' in Man Utd vs Chelsea

Paul Scholes overlooked Scott McTominay when picking his Man of the Match in Manchester United's win over Chelsea.

The Red Devils returned to winning ways against Mauricio Pochettino's side, easing pressure on Erik ten Hag after a difficult period.

Bruno Fernandes had an early penalty saved by Robert Sanchez following an Enzo Fernandez foul on Antony before McTominay notched United ahead.

Former Manchester City star Cole Palmer equalised with his first non-penalty goal of the campaign but the Scotland international popped up with his second and the winner 20 minutes from time.

McTominay, who now has six goals in all competitions, received the Man of the Match award.

Yet United legend Scholes didn't think he was the best player on the night, instead giving props to Argentine starlet Alejandro Garnacho.

The 19-year-old scored a stunning overhead kick in a recent win over Everton and was also on target in the 3-3 draw with Galatasaray.

He provided a pinpoint assist for McTominay's winner and gave Chelsea skipper Reece James a torrid time.

"I thought Garnacho was excellent," Scholes told Premier League Productions.

"I thought he was probably the best player on the pitch.

"I know Scott scored two goals and got player of the match but I thought Garnacho was excellent and he went up another level tonight."

McTominay has developed of a knack of scoring big goals for United, having also netted a late brace against Brentford back in early October.

Another United hero, Patrice Evra, talked him up by comparing him to Chelsea and England legend Frank Lampard, who is the highest-scoring midfielder in Premier League history.

Speaking on Amazon Prime's coverage, Evra said: "The way he ghosted into the box reminds me of Frank Lampard, a little bit.

"He’s always in the right place at the right time."

United are back in action on Saturday as they welcome Bournemouth to Old Trafford.
