Gareth Southgate ‘set to walk’ after Euro 2024, England have Pep Guardiola on five-man shortlist

England manager Gareth Southgate could leave after Euro 2024

The Football Association have a five-man shortlist to replace Gareth Southgate, who is reportedly set to quit after Euro 2024.

Back in December, there were rumours surrounding Southgate's future after England were knocked out of the 2022 World Cup by France.

However, Southgate decided to stay on and lead the Three Lions for Euro 2024, which will be held in Germany next summer.

According to the Daily Mail, Southgate is set to leave his role as England boss after the tournament in Germany.

Whilst Southgate was deciding whether to continue as England boss after the World Cup defeat, it has been reported that the FA were considering Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe, former Chelsea manager Graham Potter and current Blues boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Whilst Brendan Rodgers was also in the conversation after his fine work at Leicester City.

However, the FA’s dream appointment is said to be Manchester City boss, Pep Guardiola, who is often regarded as one of the best managers in the history of the sport.

During the 22/23 season, Guardiola led City to a historic treble after winning the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Champions League.

Guardiola’s current contract with City is set to expire in 2025, which comes 12 months after Euro 2024.

Back in 2021, Guardiola hinted that he would like to manage an international team in the future.

He said, as per TNT Sports: “The next step will be a national team, if the opportunity presents itself.

“I need to stop and look, learn from other coaches and then maybe take that path. I would like to coach in a European Championship, a Copa America, a World Cup.”

In the latest international break, England will take on Ukraine in Euro 2024 qualifier before facing rivals Scotland in a friendly match at Hampden Park.
