Darwin Nunez compared to Thierry Henry by Liverpool legend after brace against Bournemouth

Darwin Nunez scored a brace for Liverpool against Bournemouth

Darwin Nunez has been compared to Arsenal legend Thierry Henry after his recent performance.

On Sunday, Jurgen Klopp’s men travelled to the Vitality Stadium as they looked to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League to five points with a win against Bournemouth.

After a tightly contested first half, Liverpool moved up the gears in the second period.

A brace from both Nunez and Diogo Jota sealed a convincing 4-0 win for the Reds.

Speaking about Nunez on talkSPORT, Liverpool legend Phil Thompson claimed the Uruguyan reminded him of Henry.

He said: “The great thing about Darwin, which is what fans love. He never gives up, he always has a go. Yeah, he has got his failings but the Liverpool fans absolutely love what he gives and he doesn’t stop trying.

“I just think he has to be a bit cuter with his finishing but didn’t we see that in the Bournemouth game? A great move, he comes, a little bit, dare I say it, Thierry Henry-like. And he just glides it into the far corner.”

Thompson added: “And the second one is even better, a cross from Joe Gomez, reaching out for it, just delicately with the outside of his right foot on the stretch and puts it in the corner.

“Hopefully, listen, I haven’t seen him in training but you would think that’s what he will be finishing. When he’s going through, a little bit of a dink over somebody rather than just keep on putting his foot through the ball.”

Since joining the club from Portuguese side Benfica in a deal worth a reported £85 million, Nunez has made 73 appearances for Liverpool across all competitions, scoring 25 goals.

After his brace against Bournemouth, Nunez became the first player in the Premier League to reach 10 goals and 10 assists in all competitions this season.

Speaking about Nunez after the match, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher said on Sky Sports: “I don’t think he’ll change too much, he’ll have games like today where he scores twice and then he might miss a sitter against Fulham in midweek. But I’ve always called him 'captain chaos' because he’ll pop up with goals but at the same time he has a sheer physical power that makes defenders not want to play against him every week.

“Eighteen months in, I don’t think we’ll see anything different with Nuñez, he is what he is, and he’s a right handful. He’ll miss chances like all strikers do, but a good attacker isn’t just about scoring goals – there’s a lot more about it than that and he’s got some of those other skills in abundance.”
