Liverpool fans fume as Darwin Nunez denied penalty against Brighton

Liverpool are in Premier League action against Brighton and Hove Albion at Anfield.

Liverpool fans have been expressing their discontent on social media after Darwin Nunez was denied a penalty against Brighton and Hove Albion.

On Sunday afternoon, Liverpool had the chance to go top of the Premier League table before Arsenal take on Manchester City.

The 23/24 Premier League title race is billed to be one of the finest in history as only one point separates the top three teams.

City and Arsenal are set to face off at the Etihad Stadium after Liverpool’s match against Brighton, giving Jurgen Klopp's men the chance to go top.

However, Anfield was stunned inside two minutes after Danny Welbeck gave the visitors the lead.

With Liverpool chasing an equaliser, Nunez went down inside the penalty area and appealed for a penalty.

Replays showed a little tug by Brighton defender Pervis Estupinan but referee David Coote was unmoved.

Reacting on social media, one fan said: “That would have been given as a penalty against Liverpool any day of the week.”

Another tweeted: “Someone tell me why that’s a yellow card but it wasn’t a penalty for Nunez? they’re the exact same?”

A third fan added: “How is that a yellow for MacAllister but not a penalty against Nunez for twice the pull.”

Someone else wrote: “David Coote has given 2 fouls against Mac Allister which were the same contact as the penalty claim for Nunez... love the consistency.”

A fifth commented: “If What Mac Allister Did Was A Free Kick & A Yellow Card, That Was Absolutely A Penalty And A Yellow Card For The Pull On Nunez.”

Speaking on commentary for BBC Radio 5 Live, former Everton midfielder Leon Osman said: “There was panic on Estupinan's face, but I don't think that's enough for a penalty.”

After falling behind, Liverpool found their equaliser in the 27th minute after Luis Diaz flicked in Mohamed Salah’s header.
