Man City break Champions League record which no other English side can match for a long time

Manchester City set yet another incredible record when they won in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Pep Guardiola's side defeated FC Copenhagen 3-1 in the first leg of their last-16 tie in Denmark, making them heavy favourites to reach the quarter-final stage for a seventh consecutive season.

Kevin De Bruyne continued his fine run of form since returning from injury by firing City into an early lead with a composed strike into the bottom left-corner.

The hosts equalised when Magnus Mattsson capitalised on an Ederson blunder, but Bernardo Silva produced a smart clipped finish to restore City's advantage just before half-time.

Phil Foden wrapped up the win in injury-time when he slotted home De Bruyne's cut-back, and in doing so ensured City set a new record.

City have now won nine straight games in the Champions League, the longest winning streak by any English side in the competition's history.

The previous record for an English club was set by Liverpool in 2021/22, when Jurgen Klopp's side won seven straight games.

City need to win their next six Champions League games to equal Bayern Munich's record of 15 straight victories in the competition, set in 2020.

After the win in Copenhagen, Guardiola was keen to stress the significance of his side's victory.

"I know how difficult it is. People believe it is easy. Ask United and Bayern. It's a really tough opponent," he said.

"We made perfect concepts today. My job is to warn the players, the attributes they have. We behaved with character and personality, patience.

"Everyone was at a top level. It's not decisive, a good result. Hopefully we can make the quarters.

"Copenhagen are so compact. These type of games you expect the transitions where you suffer. Slow it down in this incredible stadium with the crowd behind.

"The stadium goes down. We have to find the spaces in the next leg. I saw the United games and how difficult it was for them."

City will look to extend their record to 10 successive wins when they host Copenhagen in the second leg on March 6.
