Gary Lineker does not hold back on Erling Haaland missing sitter in Manchester Derby

Gary Lineker does not hold back on Erling Haaland missing sitter in Manchester Derby

The Norwegian missed an open goal in the first half at the Etihad Stadium and Match of the Day host Lineker had his say

Erling Haaland produced one of the worst misses seen in quite a long time in the Manchester Derby - and Match of the Day host Gary Lineker has not held back on it.

Marcus Rashford opened the scoring at the Etihad Stadium with a stunning first time long range effort in the early stages of the game to give Manchester United a surprise lead.

United are seeking to maintain in the race for the top four, in competition with both Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa, both of whom won in the Premier League against Crystal Palace and Luton Town respectively.

Hosts City meanwhile are in the race for the title along with current leaders Liverpool and Arsenal in a three-way fight for the top flight crown.

City are aiming to reduce the deficit to Jurgen Klopp's side, who scored a dramatic late winner in the 99th minute through Darwin Nunez yesterday against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

Pep Guardiola's side have dominated the encounter, as most would have expected, but could not breach United's defence in the first half.

They managed to do just that after the break thanks to Phil Foden's screamer from outside the box which Andre Onana could not stop.

And Foden gave City the lead in the closing stages, in what could be a big goal in the Premier League title race.

But before then, Haaland could have brought City back on level terms heading into half-time.

Foden headed the ball back towards Haaland, who was right in front of the goal line.

But with the goal gaping, the Norwegian somehow managed to put the ball over the bar.

It is a chance many would not have believed the prolific Haaland - who has 79 goals in 83 games for City since moving to the Etihad Stadium in the summer of 2022 - had missed, as it is an absolute sitter.

And Match of the Day host Lineker, a retired striker who certainly knew how to find the back of the net on a regular basis.

Taking to the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, Lineker vowed Haaland's miss is the worst he has seen in the Premier League.

He wrote: "That might be the worst miss I’ve ever seen at this level. @ErlingHaaland has to head it. Incredible."

Haaland eventually made amends for the miss after netting City's third in stoppage time.
