Man City's Rodri breaks record that has stood for 16 years after Man Utd victory

Manchester City midfielder Rodri has broken a record that has stood for 16 years after his side's 3-1 victory over Manchester United.

Marcus Rashford put United ahead in the first half with a wonder strike from some 25 yards.

However, Phil Foden netted a brace after half time and Erling Haaland added a third to see City claim a crucial derby victory and go to within a point of Premier League table toppers Liverpool.

Meanwhile, United are languishing in sixth, some 11 points off Aston Villa in the final Champions League place.

The result now means City midfielder Rodri has not lost a club game since City's 1-0 defeat to Tottenham in February 2023.

Since then he has represented City on 59 occasions without tasting defeat - the longest 'invincible' streak of any Premier League player.

Rodri surpassed former Chelsea defender Ricardo Carvalho who went 58 games without defeat, between November 2006 and February 2008.

Despite breaking the record, after the game Sky Sports pundit and former Manchester United skipper Gary Neville reserved special praise for Rodri's teammate Phil Foden.

He said: "Sometimes, derby matches can be emotional and passionate affairs. But for local players, those who have come through the academy it means a lot. Phil Foden is as cold as ice.

"Today, the special talent that for years has been described as potential and promise is here to stay. He's such a wonderful player.

"It's important it's him. City go into the title run-in in a strong position."

City's victory also put an end to United's run of 143 Premier League games without losing when leading at the break.

It was also the first time City had ever come from behind to beat United in the Premier League, on the 29th occasion of them falling behind in this fixture.

They had lost the previous 15 times in a row that they had trailed against United in the league.
