Man Utd set unwanted Premier League record under Erik ten Hag in Chelsea clash

The pressure is building on Ten Hag.

Manchester United set an unwanted Premier League record during their clash with Chelsea to heap more pressure on Erik ten Hag.

United have had an underwhelming season so far, and manager Ten Hag is really starting to fell the heat.

The Dutch coach improved United in his first season in charge and brought a top four finish, but this season his side have struggled for consistency.

His side had already lost 11 Premier League games and find themselves sixth in the table, 11 points off the top four.

United travelled down to London on Thursday for a crunch league meeting with Chelsea, knowing defeat would deliver a near-fatal blow to their hopes of playing Champions League football next season.

Things couldn't have started worse at Stamford Bridge, as Conor Gallagher swept the ball past Andre Onana to give the home side an early lead.

Cole Palmer doubled Chelsea's advantage soon after when he coolly converted a penalty awarded for Antony's foul on Marc Cucurella.

After Gallagher's opener went in, a stat emerged that sums up United's underwhelming campaign.

As shared by StatmanDave on X, United have now conceded 500 in the Premier League this season, the first time this decade they have conceded that many attempts in a single league campaign.

United were handed a lifeline later in the first half when Moises Caicedo played a loose ball across the Chelsea back line.

Alejandro Garnacho latched onto it, raced through on goal and slotted past Dorde Petrovic to half the deficit.

Five minutes later and United were, remarkably, level.

Bruno Fernandes headed home Diogo Dalot's deep cross at the back post to restore parity and stun the home crowd.

Conor Gallagher could have restored Chelsea's lead just before the break, but he slammed the post with a wicked shot from a tight angle.

United looked to be heading for a comeback win when Alejandro Garnacho headed home Antony's superb cross, but Cole Palmer scored twice in injury-time to complete a remarkable 4-3 win for Chelsea.

United have now lost 12 league games this season, one short of setting a club record for defeats in a single Premier League campaign.
