Harry Maguire scores own goal after coming on for England, you couldn't write it

Harry Maguire's luck didn't get much better after he put through his own net against Scotland.

England were 2-0 up and cruising at half-time in the 150th anniversary fixture at Hampden Park, with Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham both finding the net in quick succession.

But the deficit was reduced in the 68th minute when Maguire scored an own goal. The centre-back, who did not secure a move away in the transfer window, came on at half-time to replace Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi.

He partnered Brighton's Lewis Dunk at the heart of the England defence but inadvertently helped Scotland back in the game.

Andy Robertson found himself on the right hand side and put a cross into the area. Maguire couldn't quite adjust his fight and his attempted left-footed clearance saw the ball spin past the helpless Aaron Ramsdale.

Nothing seems to be going right for Maguire at the moment, following on from him being stripped of the captaincy at United and a mistake for Ukraine's leveller on Saturday.

One fan commented: "I have never seen a player with a greater commitment to banter than Harry Maguire. He will be studied in schools for generations to come.

Another joked: "Steve Clarke’s gamble of throwing Harry Maguire on pays off."

A third said: "Harry Maguire's last two goals have been for Sevilla and Scotland."

A fourth user was a bit more brutal, stating: "An embarrassment for all concerned that Harry Maguire plays for Manchester United Football Club. Shambles."

A fifth added: "Harry Maguire is like a Main Character in a sh** American Comedy where everything goes wrong at every opportunity."

A final person posted: "Harry Maguire is an absolute calamity. A walking disaster. A punchline. So bereft of any talent or natural intuition about how to defend."

The error didn't prove costly though as England skipper Harry Kane restore the two-goal cushion with a clinical finish from a Bellingham pass.
