Mason Greenwood 'makes choice between Barcelona and Man Utd' after Sir Jim Ratcliffe comments

Mason Greenwood 'makes choice between Barcelona and Man Utd' after Sir Jim Ratcliffe comments

Greenwood has reportedly made his choice.

Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has made a decision on his next move amid comments from Sir Jim Ratcliffe, according to a new report.

Greenwood is currently on loan at La Liga side Getafe after an internal investigation by United concluded that he would leave Old Trafford by mutual consent.

The 22-year-old was suspended by United in January 2022 after his arrest on suspicion of rape and assault.

He was charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. The charges were discontinued in February.

In a statement, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said that 'a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction'.

Following their own internal investigation, which concluded last summer, United explored various avenues through which to move Greenwood on.

On deadline day, he sealed a loan move to Getafe until the end of the season.

Greenwood's contract at United expires in the summer of 2025, meaning he will be entering the final 12 months of his deal once the next summer transfer window opens.

Speaking to The Athletic on Wednesday, new United minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has stated that the club will make a fresh decision on Greenwood's future now that INEOS have taken over footballing operations.

He said: "He's a Manchester United footballer, so we are in charge of football. So the answer is, 'Yeah, we have to make decisions.'

"It's quite clear we have to make a decision. There is no decision that has been made. He's on loan, obviously, but he's not the only one.

"We have got one or two footballers that we have to deal with and we have to make a decision on, so we will do that.

"The process will be - understand the facts, not the hype, and then try and come to a fair decision on the basis of values, which is basically: Is he a good guy or not, and answer, could he play sincerely for Manchester United well and would we be comfortable with it and would the fans be comfortable with it?"

Ratcliffe also said: "The principle is the important one. We will have other issues going forward.

"You are dealing with young people who have not always been brought up in the best circumstances, who have a lot of money and who don't always have the guidance they should have.

"What we need to do when having issues like that is understand the real effects - not the hype. Then we need to make a fair decision in light of the club's values. That is what we need to do and that is how we will deal with it."

When asked whether it was feasible that Greenwood could have a future at United, he replied: "All I can do is talk about the principle of how we will approach decisions like that. Is he the right type of footballer? Is he a good person or not?"

The Sun claim that, if Greenwood was to be allowed back at United, he would prefer to stay at the club rather than go elsewhere.

Other clubs, such as Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid, have been linked with making moves for the forward this summer.

Greenwood has scored five goals and assisted a further five goals in 21 La Liga games for Getafe this season.
