Newcastle told to sign Premier League winner who had his contract ripped up on deadline day

Newcastle United have been urged to sign a former Premier League winner after he had his contract terminated on transfer deadline day.

Eddie Howe has been busy, but typically shrewd in the summer transfer market, adding the likes of Sandro Tonali from AC Milan and Harvey Barnes from Leicester City.

While Tino Livramento was drafted in from Southampton to help bolster the Magpies' back line and provide healthy competition for Kieran Trippier at right-back.

As a result, Newcastle look well-stocked in almost every position across the pitch. Although it has been argued a new goalkeeper may be a useful addition at St James' Park.

Nick Pope remains the club's first choice between the sticks, but should the Englishman get injured Howe is reliant on 34-year-old Martin Dubravka.

While the Slovakia international has often impressed when called upon by his manager, some supporters may feel they are due an upgrade.

Meanwhile, Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridge has recommended former Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, after he left Nice as a free agent on transfer deadline day after allegedly 'annoying' his teammates during training.

L'Equipe claimed in May that his 'a la carte' training schedule and lack of leadership was angering players and staff at the Ligue 1 side.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Bridge speculated that it would be a "good move" for all parties, with the Dane boasting vital Premier League experience after winning the league title with the Foxes back in 2016.

"I’ve just seen that Kasper Schmeichel has left Nice on a free," said Bridge. "I might be putting two and two together and making five, but that would be a good move for him, surely."

Pope would likely keep the number one shirt in Tyneside, but Schmeichel's arrival could provide useful back-up as Newcastle prepare to fight on all fronts this season, after qualifying for the Champions league last term.

Not to mention that he wouldn't cost the Magpies a penny, with the Premier league giants only required to cover his wages - which is unlikely to be an issue when considering Newcastle's status as the richest football club on the planet.
