Jamie Carragher makes brutally honest Premier League title prediction that could anger Newcastle supporters

Jamie Carragher makes brutally honest Premier League title prediction that could anger Newcastle supporters

The former Liverpool defender has made a bold claim.

Jamie Carragher is at risk of angering Newcastle supporters after making his brutally honest title prediction.

The Magpies have suffered defeat in six of their last seven matches in all competitions, crashing out of both the Champions League and Carabao Cup.

Consecutive losses to relegation threatened Luton and Nottingham Forest in the Premier League has left the club ninth in the table, with Eddie Howe under increasing pressure.

Meanwhile, former Liverpool defender Carragher has attempted to pinpoint why Newcastle won't achieve the immediate success of the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City following their respective financial takeovers.

After Roman Abramovich took over from Ken Bates in 2003, Chelsea won the title the following two seasons, cementing their place as one of the top clubs in the country.

Manchester City took a little longer to taste silverware after Sheikh Mansour took charge in 2008, winning their first domestic title in the 2011/12 campaign

However, Carragher reckons Newcastle fans will be waiting more than ten years before they have such luck, citing the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules as a barrier to their success.

Writing in his column for The Telegraph, the 45-year-old wrote: "No matter how much money the Saudi owners wanted to spend, there was never going to be a repeat of Chelsea in the immediate aftermath of the Roman Abramovich takeover, or Manchester City under Sheikh Mansour.

"The profit and sustainability rules do not allow it. Just after Mike Ashley sold up, I wrote in this column that I could not foresee a Newcastle Premier League title within 10 years. That may have looked like an underestimation by last summer. I stand by it."
