PSV and Bayer Leverkusen could make European football history with never-before-seen achievement

This would be incredible.

PSV and Bayer Leverkusen can make European football history this season by achieving a remarkable never-before-seen feat.

Both teams sit on top of their respective domestic leagues, with Xabi Alonso's Leverkusen currently eight points clear of Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga table.

PSV, meanwhile, are already 10 points of second-placed Feyenoord at the top of the Eredivisie standings, with new manager Peter Bosz having an incredible impact following Ruud van Nistelrooy's departure at the end of last season.

The Dutch giants also finished second in their Champions League group behind Arsenal, and will face Borussia Dortmund over two legs for the opportunity to reach the quarter-finals.

Leverkusen are in the Europa League, and won all six of their group stage matches to secure safe passage into the knockout stages.

But the main focus for both clubs will be securing their respective domestic titles - which, in Leverkusen's case, would finally end a record streak of finishing as runner-up on five occasions without winning the league.

What is even more remarkable is the fact that both teams still remain unbeaten in the league.

PSV have won 20 and drawn just two of their 22 matches thus far, with those two draws occurring during their most recent five matches.

Leverkusen, meanwhile, have won 18 and drawn four of their 22 matches at this stage.

If both teams manage to finish their seasons unbeaten in league competition, they will have done something that has never been seen before in European top division history.

While, of course, a number of teams have gone a full season unbeaten - Preston North End and Arsenal have done so in English competition, while AC Milan, Juventus, FC Porto, Celtic and Rangers are among the other clubs to have achieved the feat.

However, in terms of major European clubs, there has never been an instance where more than one club has remained unbeaten over an entire league campaign - meaning PSV and Bayer Leverkusen could create history.
