Tottenham fans have joked former player 'rigged' the FA Cup fourth round draw

Tottenham fans have joked former player 'rigged' the FA Cup fourth round draw

Spurs will host Manchester City later this month.

Tottenham Hotspur supporters have joked one of their former players helped 'rig' the FA Cup fourth-round draw after coming up against Manchester City.

Ange Postecoglou's side will host the treble winners at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in a huge clash later this month.

Spurs have a strong record against City in recent years, especially at home, but few people would call coming up against a Pep Guardiola team an 'easy draw'.

Making the draw on Monday evening before Manchester United's 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic was former Spurs captain Gary Mabbutt.

Mabbutt represented Spurs between 1982 and 1998, making a total of 611 appearances.

He made 16 appearances for England across 10 years and scored a goal for his country.

In 1991, Mabbutt lifted the FA Cup as Spurs captain and it was the last time the club lifted English football's most prestigious trophy.

Naturally, everyone's joked the 62-year-old drew a tricky tie 'on purpose' to ensure he remains the last Spurs captain to lift the FA Cup.

One person said: "Gary Mabbutt absolutely determined to carrying on being the last Spurs captain to lift the cup."

A second commented: "I'll allow this theory because it's hilarious."

While someone put: "This must be a bad omen."

Other standout ties in the draw include Wrexham travelling to Blackburn Rovers and Liverpool hosting one of Norwich City or Bristol Rovers.

Manchester United will travel to either Newport County or Eastleigh. All ties will be played across the weekend of January 27.
