Wayne Rooney lands new job in first major role since Birmingham sacking

Wayne Rooney has landed a new role after he was sacked by Birmingham City at the start of 2024.

Wayne Rooney has landed a new role after he was sacked by Birmingham City back in January.

Back in October 2023, Rooney was confirmed as Birmingham manager after he left MLS side DC United.

However, it was a disastrous appointment as the Blues fell from sixth place in the Championship to 20th.

After just 15 matches, Rooney was eventually dismissed by the club, who are now at risk of relegation from the Championship ahead of the final match week.

Since his sacking, Rooney has made appearances across different media outlets as a pundit, but he has now announced his new role.

Writing on social media, the former Manchester United and England striker wrote: “I’m excited to announce that I will be joining my good mate @GNev2 and the team at @WeAreTheOverlap to appear on the channel across some of their brilliant shows on YouTube and the podcast.

“I can’t wait to get started - head over and subscribe now!”

Rooney is set to join former teammate Gary Neville, along with Jamie Carragher, Roy Keane, Jill Scott and Ian Wright, who are the regular presenters on the podcast.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano was also enlisted for the announcement of Rooney, he said in a video: “Breaking news in the world football... Here we go! Manchester United, Everton and England legend Wayne Rooney has signed an agreement with The Overlap.

“The deal is completed and signed. Rooney will join his friends and ex-team-mates Gary Neville, Roy Keane and the rest of the team and will be making his debut very soon. Wayne Rooney to The Overlap, here we go!”

Prior to joining The Overlap, Rooney had been working as a pundit and was present in the Sky Sports studio when Liverpool lost to Everton in the Merseyside derby last week.

Last month, Rooney also appeared on TNT Sports as a pundit when United took on Everton at Old Trafford.
