Wrexham fans make feelings clear on Ben Foster's replacement after retirement announcement

Wrexham fans make feelings clear on Ben Foster's replacement after retirement announcement

Ben Foster has retired from football, with Wrexham now in need of a replacement goalkeeper.

Wrexham fans have already identified their preferred replacement for Ben Foster after he announced his retirement from football.

Foster reversed a previous retirement decision back in March to sign a short-term deal with Wrexham, helping them secure automatic promotion in a record-breaking National League title triumph.

He played eight times and saved a 96th minute penalty in a 3-2 win over Notts County. The former England goalkeeper elected to play on for another season following persuasion from owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

But after conceding 13 goals in his first four games in League Two, Foster told Phil Parkinson he felt like he was past on Saturday following a 5-5 draw against Swindon Town.

The 40-year-old provided a brutally honest explanation on his Instagram, admitting, "there's probably been about four or five goals already this season that I should be saving".

Reynolds paid tribute to the ex West Brom and Watford stopper but with just Rob Lainton and Mark Howard in the ranks, the Dragons will be on the hunt for a new goalkeeper.

And on social media, Wrexham supporters reckon they ought to make a cheeky offer for Wales international Danny Ward.

One asked: "Anyone got Danny Ward’s phone number??"

A second said: Go and get Danny Ward in on loan. Dropped down to 3rd choice keeper and playing games will be good for him, us and Wales."

A third joked: "Time to move on to the next ex Wrexham keeper. Petition to bring Danny Ward home."

A fourth was all in, writing: "Don’t tell me Danny Ward isn’t a reasonable option. 3rd choice at Leicester, would surely jump at the chance to play for Wrexham again. Was in the crowd a few times last season, loves the club. International experience."

Another added: "Ben Foster retiring means Wrexham will be in need of another keeper. They should bring in local hero, FA Cup winning, Welsh International Danny Ward would be the perfect fit."

A sixth commented: "Need a replacement keeper…. Danny Ward is available. Top keeper as well.

Ward is an ex Wrexham academy player and was spotted at the STok Racecourse last season.

Having joined as a 14-year-old, he left for Liverpool in a £100,000 deal back in 2012. He was Leicester City's first-choice goalkeeper for large spells last season, making 26 appearances in the Premier League.

However, he is now third-choice under new boss Enzo Maresca in the Championship and appears surplus to requirements.
