Former Liverpool Winger Urges Jürgen Klopp To Sign Tottenham Forward

Former Liverpool Winger Urges Jürgen Klopp To Sign Tottenham Forward

Stewart Downing has suggested Klopp turns his eyes to Heung-Min Son despite the expected imminent signing of Benfica's Darwin Núñez.

Despite it looking likely that Liverpool will complete the signing of Benfica forward Darwin Núñez this week, Stewart Downing has encouraged his former club to make an offer to Spurs for Heung-Min Son.

Football.London reported last month Liverpool were heavily interested in signing the South Korea international this summer. That was before the Lilywhites pipped Arsenal to Champions League qualification, making the acquisition of Son almost impossible. The 29-year-old has recently signed a new deal and is happy at Spurs under Antonio Conte.

Nevertheless, speaking to LiveScore.com, Downing still believes Liverpool “should try and get Son from Tottenham” even though he “would probably cost a lot of money.” Downing is right in the sense that Son is one of few players in world football who’d be able to seamlessly replace the departing Sadio Mané, but such a signing just doesn’t seem to be within the realms of possibility.

It would also appear Liverpool have got the man they want as a new forward signing this summer. Darwin Núñez is set to be revealed as a Liverpool player imminently, signing for the club in a monster deal worth £85 million. The Reds might be rich, but no way are they rich enough to sign Son and Núñez in one summer.

Spurs also have absolutely no reason to sell a man who is currently playing the best football of his career. He shared the Golden Boot in the season just gone by with Mo Salah and scored the most non-penalty goals. Contracted to the club until 2025, Spurs would have every right to demand silly money for their superstar forward.

Downing’s argument is not nonsensical. Son is a player who would suit Liverpool almost perfectly given how successful he has been as an inside forward for Spurs over the years. That said, the issue of him being completely unavailable for acquisition this summer is difficult to look past. Downing must accept Núñez will likely be the only forward Liverpool sign this summer.
