Football fans couldn't believe what they were seeing when the video of Jamie Carragher spitting at a Manchester United fan hit the news last night. However they'd clearly all rather make their own minds up than have Joey Barton preach to them.

Saturday's game between fierce rivals Manchester United and Liverpool lived up to its billing for once with Jose Mourinho's side edging an exciting game 2-1, somewhat controversially after United could have conceded two penalties.

In the video Carragher winds his car window down after being teased about the score by a United fan and his daughter in their car and the Sky Sports pundit spits at them. He has since apologised on Twitter and over the phone:

Many are now wondering if the former Liverpool defender will be able to keep his gig on Sky as a pundit and commentator and former Burnley midfielder Joey Barton added his two pennies worth on talkSPORT saying:

"That's probably down to Sky [whether he should keep his job]. But Sky probably have a large subscription base that are Man Utd fans and a large subscription base being Fathers or Mothers and they'd be really disappointed and would they want to be paying him to do that.

"Look, he's made a mistake. Say that was me, I think my position would be under-fire and I think it will be. I think it's disappointing because he's a good pundit but you just can't condone that. You can't do that to a young girl outside a football match with that kind of profile."

And whilst Barton might well be right his rap sheet is longer than most in sport and people couldn't help but spot the irony:

It will be very interesting to see how Sky move on from here, starting with whether or not Carragher will take his usual position in the studio for Monday Night Football tonight in the game between Manchester City and Stoke.

Should Carragher be sacked?
