Liverpool Women's goalkeeper Fran Kitching had to miss out on the Reds' game against Bristol City on Sunday after revealing her horrific looking injury on Twitter.

The 21-year-old took to Twitter to confirm the news that she'd miss the game and put out a short statement about the injury, alongside several pictures of the cut to her head.

On Twitter Kitching said, "So this happened in training on Tuesday hence why I'm not with the girl's for today's game...this has got to be the worst injury I've ever had as a goalkeeper but after a lot of swelling and pain (and looking like a cabbage patch doll) I can finally say I'm feeling a lot better and ready to get back out their with my girlies! I'm supporting them every minute from home. See ya back on the pitch soon."

Rachel Furness scored the only goal of the game after 14 minutes to earn the former Women's Super League champions all three points.

The win actually took the Reds' off the bottom of the table and above Bristol on goal difference, with both sides having only won once and drawn three each from their opening 12 games this season.

It was a big weekend in the WSL as title challengers Chelsea beat current champions Arsenal 4-1 away to close the gap on the north Londoners and Manchester City.

City and the Gunners are both on 33 points with the Blues one point behind but with a game in hand over both teams above them in the league.
