Neal Maupay Claims Arsenal Players Need To 'Learn Humility' After Controversial Match

The Brighton striker was in the thick of the action in the game's biggest moments as the relegation threatened club beat the Gunners 2-1.

Neal Maupay was at the centre of controversy as Brighton got a much needed win against Arsenal, and then said the Gunners' 'got what they deserved' after the match.

The Brighton striker was involved in the first half when he jumped for a ball in the box that Bernd Leno had just come to gather. The coming together led to the keeper falling awkwardly and having to be stretchered off.

Things didn't look good for the German keeper, who pointed at the striker and told him off as he left the field, and Maupay was again the bane of Mikel Arteta's day as he scored the winning goal in the 95th minute.

Rubbing salt in the wounds the Frenchman claimed the Arsenal players needed to 'show humility,' after talking a lot when they went ahead, and said the loss was exactly 'what they deserved.'

Speaking to BBC Sport the 23-year-old doubled down on his appraisal of the visitors, saying, "Some of [Arsenal] players need to learn what is humility - especially one of them. He was talking all game, he was saying bad things. I don't want to say because I could be in trouble. I said this is what happens when you talk too much."

There was also controversy straight after Maupay won the game for Graham Potters team, with Matteo Guendouzi flicking his hand out at the striker.

After the full time whistle the French midfielder again clashed with his fellow countryman as players had to be separated.

After Leno's injury it was Arsenal who looked more likely to take the lead in the first half, although his replacement Emiliano Martinez made an early save, and Brighton were somewhat saved by the break.

Nicolas Pepe eventually broke the deadlock in the 68th minute, cutting inside from the right to curl the ball over Matthew Ryan in the goal.

The lead didn't last long though as Lewis Dunk scored from a corner just seven minutes later, with goal line technology in full effect, just days after failing.

Deep into injury time Maupay grabbed the winner to hand Arsenal their second defeat in-a-row since the lockdown ended for the Premier League and leaving them eight points behind fourth place.

Brighton climbed to five points clear of the relegation zone.
