Gareth Southgate to fire up England squad by playing leaked video of Wales celebrating their Euro 2016 exit

Gareth Southgate to fire up England squad by playing leaked video of Wales celebrating their Euro 2016 exit

The clip was leaked after England were knocked out by Iceland at Euro 2016.

England manager Gareth Southgate will motivate his squad for Tuesday's World Cup clash against Wales by showing them the leaked video of Wales' squad celebrating their exit from Euro 2016.

Back in the summer of 2016, England suffered arguably the most humiliating defeat in their history when underdogs Iceland came from behind to beat them 2-1.

Roy Hodgson's side would be ridiculed by many, including a jubilant Wales squad, who would go on to reach the semi-finals after wins against Belgium, Northern Ireland and Russia.

In fact, a leaked video emerged of the likes of Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey celebrating their downfall.

Jonny Williams, who is part of Wales' 26-man squad at this winter's World Cup, filmed the scenes in 2016. He recently opened up about the footage being leaked.

“I was just the cameraman," he told The Mirror. "I was videoing it and put it in the WhatsApp group. It ended up getting leaked but the manager Chris Coleman wasn’t too bothered so I was alright.

“A lot of things went in that group chat that trip but there were a lot of players in that chat that weren’t in the squad at the time. I think it was every Wales player that had played the last few years. I didn’t know that.

“It was the summer and people were on holiday and it got leaked. The security on the WhatsApp group is a lot tighter this time. We never found out who leaked it but I get blamed anyway.”

Gareth Southgate has also commented on the above clip. In fact, when asked if the video has been used as a motivational tool, he replied: "I couldn’t say! We are aware of some of that.”

England full-back Luke Shaw, who wasn't in the England squad during that European Championship campaign as he was recovering from a broken leg, says the video is added motivation ahead of Tuesday's game.

“I think you could say that,” he said via The Guardian. “But our motivation in itself has to be at its highest level. We are at the World Cup. We have great aims for what we want to achieve.

“We have to have the maximum motivation at every game. I don’t think there’s any more motivation than what we have already. We have to have 100% motivation in every training session and every game that we have.

“It wasn’t nice. I don’t want to dwell too much on that. I want to focus on what we do on the pitch. We can say things in interviews and I’d rather do our talking on the pitch, rather than off it.”
