Paul Pogba produced one of Euro 2020's best goals but it was all for nothing as Switzerland knocked out France in the last 16.

Pogba had been praised earlier in the tournament for his performances for France compared to those in the Premier League for Manchester United.

On Monday night, the midfielder and his teammates weren't at the races for about an hour as Switzerland took a surprise, but deserved, lead and nearly went 2-0 up from the penalty spot.

Karim Benzema's sublime brace turned the game around from nowhere at the hour mark and then Pogba provided what looked like the cherry on top.

The 28-year-old collected the ball outside the area, after a blocked shot from Benzema, and curled his shot past Yann Sommer and into the top corner.

However, if the 28-year-old's goal looked like it would be the end of the action, on a crazy day in the Euros, then it was merely the middle chapter.

Haris Seferovic, who had headed the Swiss ahead, made it 3-2 with nine minutes left but that was surely just a consolation.

Vladimir Petkovic's team had a goal disallowed for offside just to give the 2018 World Cup winners a warning shot, but they didn't heed it.

Mario Gavranovic made it 3-3 in the final minute of the 90 to take it into extra time, although Kingsley Coman nearly scored in injury time.

Whilst Didier Deschamps team did have the best of extra time, with Kylian Mbappe missing the best chance of the extra thirty minutes, it finished 3-3 and went to penalties.

After Switzerland had converted all five of their spot kicks, and France all four of theirs, Mbappe stepped forward to take it into sudden death.

The PSG forward had his penalty save and Switzerland caused a huge shock!

They go through to the quarter finals to face Spain in Saint Petersburg on Friday.
