Graham Potter has a big decision to make after being handed eye-watering '£60m contract' by Chelsea

Graham Potter has a big decision to make after being handed eye-watering '£60m contract' by Chelsea

The 47-year-old was appointed by The Blues earlier this week, having been at Brighton and Hove Albion since 2019.

A new report has revealed that Graham Potter's Chelsea contract is worth a staggering £60m, with the Englishman seemingly also holding the power on key decisions within the club.

According to The Telegraph, the former Brighton boss put pen to paper on a five-year deal worth the eye-watering sum on Thursday, becoming the first managerial appointment of the Todd Boehly era as a result.

Potter led Brighton and Hove Albion to a ninth-placed Premier League finish last season, which turned out to be his final campaign on the south-coast after joining the club in 2019.

The Telegraph's Matt Law adds that, as part of his new agreement with Chelsea, the 47-year-old has been tasked with selecting a new sporting director.

Ever since the exit of Marina Granovskaia, who followed close friend Roman Abramovich out the door at Stamford Bridge, the role has been left vacant by the Blues.

Leaving the selection of a new sporting director down to the manager isn't especially unusual but it does signal a new era for Chelsea, as in years gone by such a decision would have been made without the input of the head coach.

Chelsea will reportedly look to fill the vacant role before the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which begins at the end of November.

Despite the club's huge summer outlay, a new sporting director could be tasked with bringing in new players at the request of Potter, who arrived one week after the recent transfer window closed.

Chelsea spent in excess of £250m on new players this summer, with Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly and Wesley Fofana all arriving for big money.

Following the appointment of Potter, club chairman and majority owner Todd Boehly outlined why the former Ostersunds boss was appointed ahead of other more experienced candidates.

The American businessman said in a statement: “We are thrilled to bring Graham to Chelsea."

“He is a proven coach and an innovator in the Premier League who fits our vision for the club.

“Not only is he extremely talented on the pitch, he has skills and capabilities that extend beyond the pitch which will make Chelsea a more successful club. He has had a major impact at his previous clubs and we look forward to his positive impact at Chelsea."
