Jamie Carragher told to ‘behave’ after Man United referee joke

Jamie Carragher told to ‘behave’ after Man United referee joke

Jamie Carragher made the joke live on Sky Sports on Friday night

Jamie Carragher was told to behave after the former Liverpool defender made a joke about Manchester United and referees.

On Friday night, Carragher was commentating alongside Sky Sports lead commentator Martin Tyler for the channel’s coverage of Fulham vs Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Premier League clash was being officiated by Michael Oliver, with Tyler revealing who the referee’s favourite team was.

Tyler said that Oliver could be present at Wembley for Sunday's Carabao Cup final as a fan when Newcastle take on Manchester United.

The 77-year-old stated that Oliver will not be able to referee Newcastle as he supports them.

At this moment, Carragher took the opportunity to aim a sly dig towards United.

The former Liverpool man joked: “Obviously you can't referee the club you support, so it must've been hard for them to find someone for the Carabao Cup final with Manchester United involved.”

Following the joke, Tyler told Carragher to ‘behave’.

It ended up being a tightly contested match between Fulham and Wolves, the visitors took the lead in the first half courtesy of Pablo Sarabia. Manor Solomon equalised for the Cottagers with 64 minutes on the clock. The points were shared as neither teams managed to break through during the remainder of the match.

Sunday’s Carabao Cup final will be officiated by David Coote.

Erik ten Hag’s United have the chance to end the club’s six-year trophy drought whilst Newcastle could end a mammoth 54-year wait for major silverware.

With United still fighting in all four competitions, Ten Hag has stated that he is taking it one at a time.

The Dutchman said on Thursday night: “One by one. The Europa League? We don't dream about European trophies. That's far ahead. On Sunday, we have a great opportunity to win a trophy. We’ll give everything to win that trophy.

“From now on, our focus is on that game. It doesn't matter to me (about the Europa League draw). I focus on Newcastle United, it is the only thing that counts.”

Who will lift the Carabao Cup? Only time will tell.
