Joe Hart howler gifts RB Leipzig a goal just SECONDS after Celtic fans celebrated VAR ruling out another for the German club

Joe Hart howler gifts RB Leipzig a goal just SECONDS after Celtic fans celebrated VAR ruling out another for the German club

The Celtic goalkeeper made a shocking error just moments after being let off the hook.

Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart made a huge mistake in Wednesday's Champions League match against RB Leipzig, gifting the opposition the lead just seconds after VAR had ruled out another goal for the Bundesliga club.

Celtic were beaten 3-1 in Germany and now face an uphill battle to make it out of their group.

Ange Postecoglou's side looked like they might be able to pull off a shock result when Jota cancelled out Christopher Nkunku's superb opener early in the second half.

But shortly after the hour mark, Leipzig retook the lead courtesy of a massive mistake from Hart.

Leipzig thought they had gone back in front moments earlier but Dominik Szoboszlai's superb strike was harshly ruled out for offside after a VAR review.

It was the second time Leipzig had seen a goal chalked off in the game, with Nkunku denied another in the first half after a marginal offside call.

Szoboszlai's disallowed goal sparked jubilant scenes in the Celtic end but their celebrations were short-lived.

Hart immediately gifted possession back to the home side with a sloppy pass, with Leipzig striker Andre Silva capitalising on his mistake with a neat finish in the bottom corner.

Celtic supporters were understandably upset with Hart, voicing their anger on social media.

"What have I just witnessed," wrote one fan on Twitter.

Another added: "Let off twice by VAR, but that was shocking from Hart there."

While a third joked: "Fair play to Celtic for giving Leipzig a free goal after that goal being given offside, fair play Celtic."

Leipzig killed the match with 13 minutes to go, Silva finishing off a flowing move to secure all three points for the hosts.

Defeat in Germany means Celtic have picked up just one point from their first three matches in the Champions League this season.

They return to Scottish Premiership action against St Johnstone on Saturday before hosting Leipzig in the return fixture at Celtic Park on Tuesday.
