Joey Barton Bet £750 On His Newcastle Team Beating Stevenage, They Ended Up Losing 3-1

Joey Barton once bet £750 on his Newcastle side beating Stevenage in the FA Cup, only for the 10-man Magpies to lose 3-1 in one of the competition's biggest upsets.

Barton, who scored Newcastle's consolation goal in the third round defeat in 2011, had put £497.50 on Newcastle winning inside 90 minutes.

He had also placed a £250 bet on the Toon winning at the end of both halves.

But because the game was 0-0, before there were four second half goals, that bet also failed to come in.

The former Manchester City midfielder was dispossessed in the middle of the park for Stevenage's second goal, and then reduced the deficit in stoppage time with a 30-yard belter.

But immediately after, Stevenage restored the two-goal lead and sealed the memorable victory for the League Two outfit when Peter Winn bagged.

Barton's betting was investigated in 2017 and he was hit with an 18-month suspension from football, as well as a £30,000 fine.

Barton, writing on his website, issued a lengthy statement where he revealed that he had a gambling addiction.

He also disclosed images of some of the 1200 bets that resulted in his punishment.

The bets were a mixture of games he was in the starting XI for or not involved in, including Premier League and Championship fixtures, FA Cup and League Cup, reserve games and friendlies.

He backed the opposing team to win the game but stressed that he was not in the matchday squads for any of the fixtures and could not affect the result in any way.

In 2006, Barton placed a £3.00 bet on himself to score the first goal for City against Fulham as well as a £5.00 bet that came through on teammate Georgios Samaras scoring the opening goal.

For the same fixture, he also lost £600 having backed his team to win the game. City lost 2-1 at home.
