But Joe Cole has revealed the savage put-down Mourinho dished out to Carvalho when the two had a bit of a bust-up.

Mourinho told Carvalho he wouldn't play for him again - and that kit man Mick Roberts would get a look in before him.

“Jose was the best at putting a player down in a brilliant way,” Cole said on ‘That Peter Crouch podcast’.

"Ricky Carvalho, he was obviously a great player.

“He had a row with Jose about something after the game - he didn’t play. After the game, Jose’s gone ‘you will never play again for me, you will never play’.

“John Terry number one, Gallas number two, Robert Huth three, young kid number four’ and then he went ‘kit man, Mick, I play Mick ahead of you.

“Mick was this 50-year-old with a big belly on him like that!”

Unfortunately for Mick, he never made an appearance for Chelsea and Carvalho did work his way back into Mourinho's plans.

In fact, the Portuguese international stayed at Stamford Bridge until 2010 and won a third Premier League title in his final season under Carlo Ancelotti.

He then ended up linking up with Mourinho one more time at Real Madrid, where he won La Liga and the Copa del Rey.

After retirement, Carvalho ended up serving as assistant manager to compatriot and former Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas at Marseille.
