Sporting boss Ruben Amorim has been dubbed 'the new Mourinho' and his reputation will only have been boosted. by the Europa League win.

Ruben Amorim revealed he received a text from Jose Mourinho, after guiding his Sporting side past Arsenal and into the Europa League quarter finals.

It was a hell of a night for the Portuguese side, as they knocked the Premier League leaders out of Europe, thanks to a penalty shoot out.

The Gunners took the lead through Granit Xhaka in the first half, after Mikel Arteta decided to play a strong team, rather than concentrate on their league position.

Those in north London might have hoped that it would be enough to see off the side who earned a 2-2 draw in the home leg, but it wasn't to be.

The visitors hit back to level the scores with an absolute worldie of a goal, as Pedro Goncalves went all 'Nayim from the halfway line' and beat Aaron Ramsdale from distance.

Ramsdale was blamed for the penalty shootout loss, with fans believing that he could have got to a couple of the attempts, but Amirom and his side won't mind.

The 38-year-old is building quite the reputation in Portugal, leading to some dubbing him as the 'new Mourinho,' quite the comparison.

After the match, the Sporting boss revealed that the current Mourinho had messaged him, with Roma also making it through to the quarters.

"The new Mourinho? There will never be another Mourinho," Amorim told Mais Futebol.

"He already texted me, saying that ‘the old and the new [Mourinho] are still in the next phase.'

"There will be no other Mourinho."

The former Braga manager's reputation has been building recently and he could follow in the footsteps of Mourinho, as one of the many people linked with potentially taking over from Antonio Conte at Tottenham Hotspur.

He could have to come up against his fellow Portuguese manager in the final eight of the Europa League, after Roma also made it through.

The Serie A side took a 2-0 lead to Spain to face Real Sociedad and, in the most Mourinho way possible, drew 0-0 in the second leg.

The Spanish side had 77% of possession and 19 shots, compared to the Italian's three, but couldn't find a way through, Mourinho is gonna Mourinho.
