Jurgen Klopp claims 'nobody knows' how Chelsea have spent so much money in another transfer window rant

Chelsea have signed six players in the transfer window.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has questioned how Chelsea have been able to spend so much money on players in the January transfer window - while revealing his side will need to rebuild in the next few years.

Both teams are struggling in the Premier League this season, with a 0-0 draw on Saturday leaving them 10 points adrift of the top four.

Chelsea are hoping their splurge on six players this month will be able to make up the difference and save an otherwise disastrous season.

David Datro Fofana, Andrey Santos, Benoit Badiashile, Joao Felix, Mykhailo Mudryk and Noni Madueke have all walked through the door at Stamford Bridge at a total cost of £151 million.

That's likely not the end of their spending either. David Datro Fofana, Andrey Santos, Benoit Badiashile, Joao Felix, Mykhailo Mudryk and Noni Madueke have all walked through the door at Stamford Bridge at a total cost of £151 million.

Chelsea continue to be linked with moves for Lyon full-back Malo Gusto, as well as Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo and Amadou Onana of Everton.

Liverpool's only arrival is long-term target Cody Gakpo, with the Reds still unable to bolster their options in midfield despite being weak in that position.

Klopp's been vocal regarding Liverpool's finances compared to the rest of the big six in the past. He reiterated it'll take time and patience to strengthen his squad during an appearance on BT Sport's Football People podcast.

"It’s a challenge, it is one of the main reasons I signed the new contract because I knew it is necessary and will not go [away] overnight – imagine the situation now with another coach in the chair," he said per Metro.

"I would be somewhere on holiday and everyone would shout my name. Throughout the problems, you have in a transition period, we have an awful lot of injuries, which makes life complicated. I know the majority of the world is just interested in the short term but we have to be long-term focused as well.

"There are plenty of ways you can do it but it is based on the situation you are in.

"Chelsea with new ownership, nobody knows exactly how they can spend that much money… nobody likes me talking about that."

He added: "But transition needs time if you don’t have endless money, otherwise you can change overnight pretty much and bring in ten players.

"What drives me is I’m happy to be part of a successful football team but I don’t feel responsible for that. I know I am part of it, but if it is not going well I feel 100 per cent responsible. For me to put it right is the main thing that drives me."

Liverpool return to action against Brighton in the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon. The Seagulls ran out dominant 3-0 winners over Liverpool in their Premier League fixture earlier this month thanks to a Danny Welbeck goal and Solly March brace.
