Fans think Real Madrid have 'disrespected' Cristiano Ronaldo by calling Karim Benzema 'Mr Champions League'

Fans think Real Madrid have 'disrespected' Cristiano Ronaldo by calling Karim Benzema 'Mr Champions League'

Karim Benzema scored the only goal of the game as Real Madrid beat Liverpool 1-0 to claim a 6-2 Champions League aggregate win.

Fans have accused Real Madrid of disrespecting Cristiano Ronaldo on social media with their post about Karim Benzema.

The Los Blancos captain scored the only goal of the game as Real beat Liverpool 1-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu to claim a 6-2 aggregate Champions League round of 16 victory.

Benzema had notched twice at Anfield and came up clutch as he often does for Carlo Ancelotti's men.

Since Ronaldo left in 2018, Benzema has seamlessly transitioned into Real's talisman and delivered in the biggest moments when his team have needed him.

He was playing a supporting role for nine years but is now very much the main character for Real, who branded him 'Mr Champions League' after he found the net again.

However the comment irked plenty of Ronaldo fanboys, who were quick to point out that he is the all-time Champions League record goalscorer with 140 goals and won the competition four times.

One wrote: "This is total disrespect to Cristiano Ronaldo. What are you smoking, Admin?"

A second said: "Rare L admin. There's only one Mr Champions League and that's Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro."

Another opined: "That's a bit shameless Ngl considering that it is always gonna be Cristiano.

A fourth tweeted: "Don't disrespect Cristiano Ronaldo like that."

A fifth agreed: "Settle down Cristiano Ronaldo is Mr. Champions."

Benzema, who won his first Ballon d'Or last year, has notched 89 Champions League goals for Lyon and Real.

And he's admitted that he learned a lot from playing alongside Ronaldo for just short of a decade at the Santiago Bernabeu.

"When I watched him, I tried to understand everything he did: the goals, the shots, the passes, the ball controI, " he told Onze Mondial.

"I dissected everything about Ronaldo. That’s why I can say: it’s impossible to achieve the same."

14-time European Champions Real are in the hat for the quarter final draw, which will take place on Friday.
