Boxing star Canelo Alvarez has been ruthlessly slammed by fans after threatening Argentina captain Lionel Messi for allegedly disrespecting the Mexico shirt and flag.
Messi broke the deadlock against Mexico in the second half and fired Argentina into the lead in their must-win World Cup match on Saturday.
The 35-year-old Argentine forward, who is believed to be competing at his final World Cup, then set up Enzo Fernandez to help seal a stunning 2-0 win for his side.
Argentina’s vital win at the Lusail Stadium handed them a fighting chance to reach the last 16 after their humiliating defeat to Saudi Arabia in their Group C opener.
Messi and Co celebrated in fashion after Argentina’s win over Mexico, with the players breaking out into a spine-tingling chant in the dressing room.
However, it appeared that the Paris Saint-Germain superstar accidentally kicked a Mexico shirt or flag on the floor when he was taking off his boots.
The footage of Messi appearing to ‘disrespect’ Mexico prompted fury from Mexican superstar Canelo, who called out the Argentina skipper for his “bulls**t” actions.
“Did you guys see Messi cleaning the floor with our jersey and flag,” he tweeted.
“He better pray to God that I don’t find him. Just like I respect Argentina, he has to respect Mexico!
“I’m not talking about the country as a whole, just about the bulls**t that Messi did.”
However, fans slammed Canelo for his threat towards Messi and pointed out that the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner didn’t disrespect Mexico during the celebrations.
“Nothing in this video shows him cleaning his boots or the floor, my dude is just celebrating,” one fan said in response to Canelo’s tweet.
Somebody else posted: “He got all that from this video? Man must have super vision.”
Another fan commented: “It looks like a jersey, which is on the floor unintentionally. Bruh, Messi is not so shallow, come on.”
“Canelo beefing a soccer player over something that didn’t happen,” one fan said.
While another added: “I see nothing wrong. Am I missing something?”
Argentina will resume their World Cup campaign on 30th November when they face Group C leaders Poland at the Stadium 974.
Lionel Scaloni’s men will reach the knockout stages with a win over Poland, but a draw between Mexico and Saudi Arabia would also ensure them a place in the last 16.
