'I'm convinced this can't work' - Jamie Carragher mocked after his Lisandro Martinez criticism resurfaces

Jamie Carragher has been mocked by Manchester United supporters after a clip of him criticising the signing of Lisandro Martinez resurfaced on social media.

Martinez, 24, has impressed since joining United in a £56.7m transfer from Ajax in the summer.

'The Butcher', as he is now known among United supporters, has seamlessly adapted to Premier League football and is now the first-choice centre-back at Old Trafford.

He produced another solid performance on Sunday as United beat West Ham at home.

Marcus Rashford scored the only goal of the game to seal a hard-fought 1-0 win for the Red Devils, who held out to claim a clean sheet despite huge pressure from West Ham towards the end of the game.

A clip of Carragher criticising the signing of Martinez has since circulated on social media.

Speaking after United had lost their first two games of the Premier League season against Brighton and Brentford, Carragher questioned whether Martinez would be able to play in a back four because of his relatively short height, 5ft 9in.

“We should never judge managers or players too early, but I'm convinced this can't work because the size of him playing in a back four," Carragher said on Sky Sports.

"Maybe he could go left-back, maybe he could play in a back three, but in a back four, he cannot play there in the Premier League."

Carragher added: "The reason why they're gonna have a huge problem with [Martinez] at centre-back is every single team that play Manchester United - maybe bar Man City and Liverpool, who might feel, 'we don't need to change for Man United' - should target that. And if they don't, they're crackers.

"They really should do that and I think [United] have got a huge problem.

"And [Eric] Ten Hag has got his fingerprints a little bit over this team, and I think the two or three things he's influenced are not working."

United supporters were quick to mock Carragher for his comments after seeing their side move back up to fifth in the Premier League.

"The real reason he can't be a cb in the prem is because his little pockets have less room & they're already full of strikers by November," posted one fan on TikTok.

Another added: "Carragher talks like he was a good cb in his day."

While a third commented: "He's 2in shorter than Carra. And 10 times the footballer."

Martinez will hope to continue his excellent start at United when they face Real Sociedad in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Erik ten Hag's side can still finish top of their group if they win by two or more goals in Spain.
