‘As bad as anyone’ - Jamie Carragher issues scathing assessment of Liverpool after Brighton battering

‘As bad as anyone’ - Jamie Carragher issues scathing assessment of Liverpool after Brighton battering

Jurgen Klopp’s side have endured a torrid season. A disjoined, toothless performance at the Amex Stadium has seen them drop to ninth in the table, some 16 points from league leaders Arsenal having played a game more.

The Reds have now picked up just one point in their three Premier League encounters in 2023, after they were dismantled by a Solly March brace and a late Danny Welbeck strike.

Indeed, Liverpool have scored fewer goals, conceded more, won fewer points and have a worse goal difference than at this stage of any previous full top-flight campaign under Klopp, who was appointed eight years ago.

The Merseyside club’s performances have received criticism from a number of quarters, including from former player Carragher.

Carragher on Liverpool

Carragher, who played for Liverpool his entire career, took to Twitter yesterday to criticise the club's defence.

The 44-year-old wrote on Twitter: “Liverpool are as bad defensively as anyone in the Premier League right now.

"Fortunately they have the best 'keeper [Alisson Becker] which means they aren't further down the table."

After a fan questioned Liverpool’s ability to secure Champions League qualification this term, Carragher added: "Hopefully it's a Chelsea season where you miss Europe and win the Premier League next season!"

While Liverpool can argue with some justification that their form has been affected by injuries to Virgil van Dijk, Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and several others, their recent defensive frailties have been astounding.

Costly mistakes were responsible for their 3-1 defeat at Brentford two weeks ago, and a 2-2 draw at home to Wolves in the FA Cup third round last Saturday.

‘Cant remember a wore game’

After the Brighton defeat, Klopp told the BBC he couldn’t remember a worse game involving his side.

Speaking after the humbling south coast defeat he said: "I can't remember a worse game. I honestly can't.

"Brighton played very well. They deserved to win. It was a very organised team against a not very organised team.

"Of course, we're very concerned. How can you not be after a game like this?"
