Paul Merson States Liverpool Have Made A 'Fantastic' Signing

Paul Merson States Liverpool Have Made A 'Fantastic' Signing

The pundit said that other managers will envy the signing of this young midfielder.

Paul Merson has revealed his feelings on Liverpool’s new signing Fabio Carvalho, describing him as a “top talent”.

Carvalho completed his move from Fulham to the Merseyside club in May for a reported fee of £5 million, potentially rising to £7.7 million with add-ons.

The 19-year-old was an integral part of the Cottagers promotion campaign, managing double figures for goals in 36 Championship appearances last season.

This excellent season also earned him a first call-up to Portugal’s under-21 team in March, and he has now made four caps for the youth side, scoring twice.

Jurgen Klopp will believe the midfielder is ready to make an impact at the highest level and will compete with the club’s current cohort of midfielders and wide players in the upcoming 2021/22 season.

Pundit Paul Merson was full of praise for Carvalho, telling Sports Keeda:

“Fabio Carvalho is not someone who will start from week one for Liverpool, but this guy is a top talent and played a big role in Fulham’s promotion bid last season.

“I think this is the kind of signing other managers might look at and think, ‘Why didn’t we get him?’ because he’s a fantastic talent.

“Jurgen Klopp just makes players better and I personally like his eye for talent."

"He did something similar with Harvey Elliot last season and the kid was playing unreal football before his injury against Leeds United, so I expect Carvalho to play an important role for Liverpool."

“My best guess is that Carvalho will start off as an attacker before eventually being transitioned into midfielder."

"You look at the likes of Jordan Henderson and realise that Liverpool’s midfield is running on its last legs, so I’m sure there’s some kind of succession plan already in place.”

Carvalho was the first of three summer signings Klopp has acquired thus far this summer.

Darwin Núñez has been brought in from Benfica for £85 million presumably to fill the void left by Sadio Mané, while Calvin Ramsay has been added from Aberdeen for £6.5 million to provide cover and competition for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

It’s understood that Liverpool’s focus will now be on outgoings.
