Liverpool's five greatest January signings in the Premier League era

Liverpool's five greatest January signings in the Premier League era

A look at five of Liverpool's greatest January signings of the Premier League era.

Liverpool have pulled off some incredible January transfer window deals in the Premier League era. Here are five of the best.

In years gone by, the Reds have often used the window as a chance to refresh their squad ahead of the second half of the season.

Whilst some other clubs tend to focus more on their summer business, and only spend in January if necessary, Liverpool take a different approach to the window.

They could be busy this year, with midfielders Jude Bellingham and Enzo Fernandez both strongly linked with moves.

How much money Jurgen Klopp's side are willing to spend is another question, but don't be surprised to see new additions this season, like the signing of Luis Diaz from Porto last January.

Let's take a look at five of the Reds' best January signings, in particular order, from the beginning of the Premier League era.

Virgil van Dijk (Southampton to Liverpool, 2018)

When Virgil van Dijk posed in front of a Christmas tree in December 2017, Liverpool shirt in hand, Reds fans could only dream of the impact that he would make on the club.

Liverpool spent a then-world record fee of £75 million to acquire the defender, meaning there was plenty of pressure on Van Dijk to perform.

But after scoring on his debut - in an FA Cup tie against Everton, no less - Van Dijk never looked back.

Seven trophies later, including a Champions League trophy and a first top division title since 1990, it is fair to say that £75m was money well spent.

Luis Suarez (Ajax to Liverpool, 2011)

Liverpool pulled off one of the most chaotic deadline day swoops of all-time in 2011, bringing in Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll to replace Chelsea-bound Fernando Torres.

Carroll eclipsed Suarez's transfer fee by nearly £28m, with Liverpool paying £50m to sign him from Newcastle. But it was the Uruguayan who ended up having a far greater impact at Anfield.

He produced one of the greatest Premier League seasons ever witnessed in 2013/14, smashing in 31 goals - despite missing the first five games of the campaign due to serving a ban for biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic.

Liverpool missed out on the title to Manchester City by just two points, and Suarez left for Barcelona that summer.

Philippe Coutinho (Inter Milan to Liverpool, 2013)

Liverpool completed the signing of 20-year-old attacking midfielder Philippe Coutinho in January 2013, paying Inter Milan just £8.5m to acquire his services.

Despite being rated as a future talent, the Brazil international had failed to receive consistent game time at Inter, so Reds fans were unsure what to fully expect.

What they got was a player who quickly developed into one of their top stars, and would remain in that position for another five years.

By the time he moved to Barcelona for a huge fee of an initial £105 million in January 2018, Coutinho had scored 54 goals and provided 43 assists in 201 Reds appearances, and was a critical cog in Jurgen Klopp's side.

Daniel Sturridge (Chelsea to Liverpool, 2013)

Signed in the same window as Coutinho, Reds fans only saw Daniel Sturridge at his consistent absolute best for around 18 months of his Anfield career due to injuries - but what an incredible 18 months it was.

Forming a potent 'SAS' partnership with Suarez, Sturridge smashed in 10 league goals in just 14 appearances in his first season, before a further 21 goals in 29 games the following campaign. Together, the pair almost guided the Reds to a historic first Premier League title.

But he was restricted to just 12 appearances in the 2014/15 campaign because of injury and, with Suarez also gone, Liverpool were not the same side.

Daniel Agger (Brondby to Liverpool, 2006)

Liverpool signed centre-back Daniel Agger from Brondby in January 2006 under Rafael Benitez, and the Denmark international went on to have a successful eight-year stint with the Reds.

He made over 200 appearances for Liverpool, winning two trophies, and started the 2007 Champions League final defeat to AC Milan in Athens.

A popular figure at Anfield, Agger recently returned to England to play in a Liverpool Legends match in March.
