Liverpool suffer major blow in plan to replace Jurgen Klopp as job offer rejected by key figure

Liverpool suffer major blow in plan to replace Jurgen Klopp as job offer rejected by key figure

Liverpool are in the process of finding Jurgen Klopp’s replacement.

Liverpool have suffered an early blow in their process to replace Jurgen Klopp.

Last week, Liverpool’s future was thrown into chaos after it was confirmed that Klopp is stepping down as the club’s manager at the end of the 23/24 season.

During an emotional interview, Klopp said he was ‘running out of energy’ and would not be able to do the job ‘again and again and again’.

Since the news broke, the likes of Xabi Alonso, Roberto de Zerbi and Ruben Amorim have all been linked with the Anfield job.

On Tuesday afternoon, transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano gave an update on the situation and it has been revealed that Liverpool have suffered an early blow.

Romano wrote on social media: “EXCLUSIVE: Liverpool have made contact with Michael Edwards over the weekend. FSG plan was to offer to be in charge of the restructure at the club.

“Understand Edwards has rejected #LFC proposal as he’s not interested even in a more senior role as of today.”

During Klopp’s time in charge of the Reds, Michael Edwards was an integral part as he occupied the role of sporting director.

Edwards is often regarded as the brains behind the club’s impressive recruitment.

Back in November 2021, Edwards decided to leave Liverpool.

In a statement, Edwards said: “I had always planned to cap my time at the club to a max of 10 years.

“I've loved working here, but I am a big believer in change. I think it's good for the individual and, in a work setting, good for the employer too.”

He added: “To be part of this club during this period has been a privilege, due to the people I have been fortunate enough to work with and the success we have enjoyed.”

Since leaving the club, Edwards has been linked with the likes of Manchester United, Real Madrid and Chelsea.
