Liverpool defender Nat Phillips opens up on embarrassing Zlatan Ibrahimovic at the San Siro

The Reds' defender has lifted the lid on his infamous Cruyff turn.

Liverpool defender Nat Phillips has opened up on THAT turn against AC Milan during their Champions League group stage match in 2021.

Liverpool have endured a dismal campaign under Jurgen Klopp, languishing in sixth place in the Premier League, some seven points adrift of the Champions League places.

Their poor form has led to calls for a major overhaul, with plenty of players expected to pack their bags and move on for pastures new.

Among those rumoured with a move away is 26-year-old defender Phillips, who looks set to leave the club six years after he arrived in Merseyside.

However, there is one moment that will stay with him forever, after he left Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the dust at the San Siro.

"I've been dining out on that"

Philips has since lifted the lid on his infamous Cruyff turn which saw him casually elude both Ibrahimovic and Frank Kessie in his own six-yard box, sending the latter hurtling towards the turf, before calmly playing a pass up field.

Speaking on Liverpool’s YouTube channel, Philips joked: “I don’t think I saw it coming! I’ve been dining out on that for a while to be fair."

The match finished 3-2 to the Reds, with Jurgen Klopp labelling Phillips' silky skill "the situation of the game".

"He played an outstanding game," the Reds boss said in his post-match press conference. "Nat with that situation... I didn't see it, only from distance. I'm really looking forward to seeing it for the first time.

"We spoke already in the dressing room about it. It was a tricky one!"

Phillips set to leave Liverpool

Phillips has had a stop-start career at Liverpool, having spent time on loan with Stuttgart and AFC Bournemouth. Whilst he has only featured in 29 Premier League matches for Klopp.

It looked as though he may be given his chance in the 2020/21 campaign, when Phillips stepped in for a number of injured absentees.

However, he has fallen down the pecking order since then, and will be allowed to leave this summer, claim The Atheltic.

The defender was linked with Newcastle and West Ham during the January transfer window, where it was reported that the Reds would accept an offer of £15 million for the player.
