Ex-Arsenal Midfielder Paul Merson Cannot Believe Liverpool Signed This Player For Just £8M

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has revealed his admiration of Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has revealed his admiration of Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson, and expressed his shock at the Anfield club being able to sign him for just £8 million.

Robertson was one of Jürgen Klopp’s first signings at Anfield, brought in from Hull City in 2017.

Speaking to SportsKeeda, Merson has congratulated the Liverpool scouting team for the role they played in the acquisition of the Scot all those years ago.

He notes that Liverpool didn’t “unearth a hidden gem from the far depths of Brazil,” instead, Robertson was “right in front of their eyes.”

Merson thus labels Robertson as an “unbelievable” signing for Liverpool.

He goes on to describe the “meagre £8 million” the Merseyside club spent on the Scotsman as “just baffling.”

Indeed, Robertson’s time at Liverpool has been a brilliant success story. Since joining the club he has racked up 224 appearances and 112 goal contributions.

Not bad going for a left-back.

Liverpool fans will be hoping Robertson’s compatriot and new arrival at Anfield Calvin Ramsay will enjoy a similarly successful career.

The 18-year-old comes in as an incredibly raw talent having only made 28 career appearances to date, but will seek to provide competition for Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back.

It’s the first time Alexander-Arnold has had a designated understudy at Anfield for quite some time.

Since Nathaniel Clyne’s departure in June 2020, Alexander-Arnold has been the only natural senior right-back in the Liverpool squad.

The likes of James Milner and Joe Gomez have covered for him when necessary.

The English full-back will be pleased to see Ramsay arrive at the club so he can gain respite whenever necessary next term.

The same applies to Robertson. After a difficult first season in England, Kostas Tsimikas has acclimatised well to the Premier League and has become something of a cult hero at Anfield.

Liverpool fans will be pleased to see Jürgen Klopp adding some squad depth at full-back. No one will be quite like Alexander-Arnold and Robertson, but it’ll comfort Kopites to know Ramsay and Tsimikas can fill in when needed.
