Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony has told Liverpool that they should look at signing Brentford striker Ivan Toney in the upcoming transfer windows.

Toney has been in superb form for the Bees this season, scoring eight Premier League goals in 10 appearances. Only Harry Kane and Erling Haaland have scored more.

The forward's displays earned him a maiden call-up to the England squad for the recent Nations League fixtures against Germany and Italy.

Although Toney did not play in either game, he is expected to be named in the final 26-man squad to go to the World Cup in Qatar.

Darragh MacAnthony wants Liverpool to target Toney

Speaking on his podcast, 'The Hard Truth - Inside the Football Industry', Posh chairman - and Liverpool fan - MacAnthony has said that if he would love the Reds to sign Toney.

He explained: "Ivan is on a different level. Is there a better number nine at Chelsea? Is there a better number nine at Manchester United?

"You can go and write a cheque for £100 million and buy a player from Holland, or France, or Italy, and give them a year to acclimatise, or you can write a cheque and buy one of the top three number nines in the Premier League, who's not even in the prime of his career.

"What do you do? Right now, if Liverpool had owners who would write that cheque, I'd happily have him in Liverpool's team like that."

MacAnthony and Toney

MacAnthony - who has been Posh chairman since 2006 - signed Toney from Newcastle United in 2018.

The forward went on to score 40 goals in 76 games for the League One side. Peterborough were promoted at the end of his second season. Toney's performances earned him the move to Brentford in the summer of 2020.

Shortly before the transfer was completed, MacAnthony told The Football Show (quotes via Bristol Post) that Peterborough "don't sell [their] players cheap".

The club managed to receive a fee of £10 million from the Bees for Toney, with that already proving incredible value for money.
