James Milner names his most iconic Liverpool memory ahead of summer departure

James Milner names his most iconic Liverpool memory ahead of summer departure

It was a simple choice for the Liverpool veteran.

Liverpool midfielder James Milner has named his favourite memory at the club as he prepares to leave Anfield at the end of his contract.

The Reds announced on Wednesday that Milner, along with Roberto Firmino, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita, will depart the club on free transfers on June 30.

For Milner, it brings to an end an eight-year spell at Anfield, with the England midfielder having been signed in 2015 under the management of Brendan Rodgers.

The 37-year-old has won seven trophies at the club, including the 2019 Champions League and 2020 Premier League titles.

He is now third on the list of all-time Premier League appearances, with his 617 games only bettered by Ryan Giggs (632) and Gareth Barry (652).

And Milner could yet climb to top spot on the list, as he is reportedly in talks with Brighton over a move once his Liverpool deal expires.

In the meantime, the 37-year-old will say farewell to the Anfield crowd on Saturday, with the Reds take on Aston Villa in a crunch Premier League clash.

Milner reveals favourite Liverpool memory

As part of the 'Making Memories' series presented by AXA, who are one of Liverpool's partners, Milner met a fan who was diagnosed with dementia in 2021.

AXA, Liverpool FC and Alzheimer's Society are committed to helping to improve the lives of people living with dementia - and the aim of the 'Making Memories' series is to create new memories related to sporting events and sporting figures, as well as to raise awareness of dementia.

The pair had a conversation about all things Liverpool - and Milner was asked for his most iconic memory in a Reds shirt.

He replied: "I think the Barcelona [Champions League semi-final 2019, which Liverpool won 4-0].

"Everyone knows how special European nights are anyway. And I think to go on and turn the game around with that atmosphere, and then to go on to win the football, it was special."

Milner was at the centre of the occasion in central midfield, playing 90 minutes as Liverpool pulled off a thrilling comeback from 3-0 down in the first leg.

Jurgen Klopp's side then beat Tottenham 2-0 in the final to lift their sixth European Cup - and it was Milner's crowning glory in a Reds shirt.
