"We are having..." - Agent gives big update on Liverpool contract talks with star player

The agent of Liverpool star Roberto Firmino has given the latest update on contract talks between the Brazilian forward and the Reds.

The agent of Liverpool star Roberto Firmino has given the latest update on contract talks between the Brazilian forward and the Reds.

Firmino's deal with Liverpool expires this summer, meaning he could leave the club on a free transfer at the end of the current season.

Speaking last month, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp said he wants Firmino to stay at Anfield - and the player himself is also said to be interested in extending his stay.

The Daily Mail claimed last month that Firmino was leaning towards remaining at Liverpool beyond this season. That is despite interest from Saudi Arabian clubs, who reportedly want to sign the Brazilian to boost the country's profile ahead of a bid for the 2030 World Cup.

The Saudi Pro League recently acquired Cristiano Ronaldo, with the Manchester United and Real Madrid legend playing for Al Nassr.

Firmino, now 31, is Liverpool's second-highest goalscorer in all competitions this term, with nine goals to his name. He has been injured since December, however, with the Reds struggling in his absence.

Now, the forward's agent has given an update on his future.

Firmino agent gives update on Liverpool talks

Speaking to Sky Sports Germany, Roger Wittmann said: "It's a very long relationship between Roberto and Liverpool. Roberto feels good. At the moment, we're in a great exchange and in February we'll probably know where the journey is going.

"But Roberto also has to have a say in order to reach an agreement with Liverpool.

"We're on the right track. We're having really good talks with Liverpool. They're a superbly positioned club."

According to French outlet Foot Mercato, Real Madrid are considering a pre-contract offer for Firmino in the coming months.

Because the 31-year-old is into the final six months of his Anfield deal, he can discuss a pre-contract with any European club. The rule is different for English clubs, who can only discuss terms when he enters the final month of his deal.

For now, though, Firmino will be a Liverpool player until at least the end of the campaign, and will hope to help the Reds get back on track and improve their ninth-placed standing in the Premier League when he returns from injury.
