Ex-Premier League Defender Suggests Liverpool Should Look At Signing Expensive Chelsea Forward

Ex-Aston Villa and Spurs right-back Alan Hutton has suggested Liverpool should look to bring in Timo Werner this summer to help fill the goals void left by Sadio Mané.
Liverpool were tentatively linked with a move for the German international last week, and speaking to Football Insider, Hutton has revealed his belief that the Anfield side should formalise their interest.
The defender notes Werner could “bring something with his pace and trickery” and he believes the German would “fit into the system” at Liverpool.
Liverpool were heavily interested in acquiring Werner’s services before he made his £47.5 million switch to Chelsea 2 years ago.
Whether Chelsea would be prepared to let the 26-year-old leave this summer is currently unclear.
The former RB Leipzig man started just 15 Premier League matches last term, picking up something of a bit-part role in West London after a difficult first season in English football.
Last season, he primarily operated as an inside forward on the left flank for Chelsea.
However, he was initially brought in to fulfil the ominous task of being the Blues’ main striker.
Given he is viewed as more of a wide forward by Thomas Tuchel now, his future is in doubt.
Chelsea have been heavily linked with moves for Raheem Sterling and Raphinha in recent weeks, who both operate in the same areas as Werner. The German could be somewhat surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge next season.
As Hutton notes though, he’d still be “very surprised” to see Werner depart “with Lukaku leaving.”
In all likelihood, Werner will return to a more central role at Chelsea and stay at the club for the 2022/23 campaign.
That said, if Liverpool do offer an attractive enough proposition to Chelsea, Thomas Tuchel’s side could be tempted to cash in on a man who has underwhelmed since arriving in the Premier League.
Alan Hutton is right to suggest Werner would be well suited to Liverpool, but unless Mo Salah leaves, the Reds probably won’t move for another forward following the signing of Darwin Nuñez.
