Journalist Claims £47.5M Chelsea Star Should've Joined Liverpool Instead

Timo Werner should've joined Liverpool not Chelsea, Fabrizio Romano claims

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has claimed Timo Werner should've joined Liverpool instead of Chelsea.

Werner moved to the the blues two years ago when Frank Lampard was still in charge. He was signed to be the club’s main striker, but after scoring just 6 goals in his first Premier League season, he was soon replaced.

Romelu Lukaku was brought back in last summer to be the club's new talisman.

And whilst Lukaku and Chelsea’s remarriage eventually proved to be an unsuccessful one, it portrayed the lack of faith in Werner.

Instead of reinstating the 26-year-old into the team, Tuchel opted to deploy Kai Havertz as a false 9.

In his column for Caught Offside, Romano described the German as a “high-level player” who “needs a different style of play to shine.”

"A move to Liverpool instead [of Chelsea] could have helped him fulfil his potential.”

“Unfortunately, Chelsea were quicker at the time, with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp speaking to the player, but no direct talks between the Reds and RB Leipzig.”

Romano is right, there is a player in Timo Werner.

Whilst he’s not always the most clinical, he did manage to bag 28 Bundesliga goals in the season before his move to England.

The Chelsea system just doesn’t cater to his needs and style of play.

If Jürgen Klopp pushed harder to sign the Germany international 2 years ago, Werner’s Premier League tale could have been written very differently.

But what has turned out to be a very sorry stint for Werner in England looks like it could be ending this summer, with former club RB Leipzig and Juventus interested in signing him.

The German is young, and still has much to offer the game.

A departure from the Premier League could be just what he needs to get back to his Bundesliga form.
