Liverpool legend Gerrard 'holds talks' over shock managerial move

Liverpool legend Gerrard 'holds talks' over shock managerial move

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has reportedly held talks over a surprise managerial role.

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has held talks with Turkish club Trabzonspor over the possibility of becoming their next manager, according to a new report.

Gerrard has been out of management since his sacking by Aston Villa in October.

He spent almost a year at Villa Park, following a successful spell at Rangers which saw him guide the club to their first Scottish Premiership title in 10 years. In the same season, Rangers also went unbeaten in the league.

But he was unable to further his managerial reputation at Villa, ultimately leaving the club after winning just two of their opening 12 games of the season.

Criticism was aimed at the Reds icon for not getting the most out of his attacking players, while injuries and the departure of influential assistant manager Michael Beale to QPR also didn't help Gerrard.

But he could now reportedly get back into management with a surprise move.

Gerrard 'holds talks with Trabzonspor'

According to Turkish outlet Karar, Gerrard has flown to Turkey to hold talks with the interim president of Trabzonspor, Ertugrul Dogan.

The previous manager, Abdullah Avci, resigned from his role earlier this week, opening the door for Gerrard to potentially take over.

It is claimed that the former Villa boss had dinner with the interim president and discussed the possibility of taking the managerial role.

Should Gerrard take over as Trabzonspor boss, he would be managing a squad that won last season's Turkish Super Lig title.

But this campaign has been much more of a struggle. The side currently sit in sixth place in the league table, 22 points behind leaders Galatasaray.

They did win the Turkish Super Cup, but finished in third place in their Europa League group and failed to progress beyond the play-off round of the Europa Conference League.

Trabzonspor's squad contains former Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund defender Marc Bartra, Napoli legend Marek Hamsik and Ajax starlet Naci Unuvar, who is on loan at the club.

They also signed Jean-Philippe Gbamin on loan from Everton in the summer, along with the signing of Trezeguet from Villa on a permanent deal.
