"At the moment..." - Former Liverpool star claims one player is too good to be playing for Klopp's side

"At the moment..." - Former Liverpool star claims one player is too good to be playing for Klopp's side

He's stood out in recent weeks.

Dietmar Hamann believes Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara to be "too good" for Liverpool right now.

As the dust settles on Liverpool's shock 3-1 defeat to Brentford on Monday night, Hamann has been reflecting on individual players' performances, and Thiago was the pick of the bunch according to the TalkSPORT pundit.

However, he was less complimentary of Fabinho, who he believes to be the "main culprit" for their defensive instability this season.

Here's what the former Liverpool midfielder had to say: "I think game management was always one of their strengths, they always knew what to do at the right time."

Hamann continued: "But obviously, you depend on players being in-form, and the main culprit I’d say is probably Fabinho because he’s not been that defensive shield that he has been over the last few years. When the back-four haven’t got any protection then you obviously give away chances. They’ve got two very offensive full-backs, we know that, so it’s even more important that the middle is solid."

Why Thiago?

The ex-Bayern Munich man then discussed the form of midfield duo Fabinho and Thiago, comparing the stark difference in their form, even claiming that the Spaniard is "too good" for the club.

"Fabinho has not been the same for the last six or seven months, and in Thiago they’ve got a player who likes to play with the ball, and I don’t think Liverpool is good enough at the moment to have Thiago in their team.

"Harvey Elliott is a very promising player but obviously when things are not going well, it’s hard for a young lad to make the difference," Hamann added.

Liverpool's dip in form is no secret, with the club currently sitting seven points outside the Champions League places.

And Hamann has made his feelings known on Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp, often being openly critical of the Liverpool boss.

Most recently, he questioned the German's "hunger" and "desire", contemplating whether his days were numbered at Anfield.
