Romano claims Liverpool are in the race to sign 'one of the world's best talents', Klopp is a huge fan

Romano claims Liverpool are in the race to sign 'one of the world's best talents', Klopp is a huge fan

Liverpool are reportedly targeting one of world football's top young talents.

Liverpool have joined the race to sign Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The German attacking midfielder broke into the Leverkusen first team in the 2020/21 season, and scored seven goals, along with providing 10 assists in the Bundesliga last term.

A serious knee injury suffered last March meant he missed nine months of action, but has provided four goals for his team-mates in nine league appearances since his return.

And his comeback to full fitness has reignited the race to sign him this summer, with Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid linked with a move for the 19-year-old.

Now, Romano claims that Liverpool are now in the race to sign the Leverkusen wonderkid.

Liverpool 'keen on signing Florian Wirtz'

In a video on his YouTube channel, Romano commented on the speculation surrounding the attacking midfielder: "What I can tell you is that Barcelona are following him for sure, their people have been spending time to follow the player.

"The same for Real Madrid, so the two Spanish clubs are monitoring the player.

"But I'm told that also English clubs are keeping an eye on Wirtz. Especially the situation of Liverpool is one to watch, because Liverpool are monitoring the player.

"I'm told that [Reds boss] Jurgen Klopp is said to be a big fan of Florian Wirtz, so they are among many clubs monitoring the player."

Romano also described the Germany international as 'one of the world's top talents' - and he was recently compared to Lionel Messi by his current Leverkusen boss, and Liverpool legend, Xabi Alonso.

Speaking to reporters in January (quotes via Goal), the Spaniard said: "Why is Messi so good? Because he knows how and when to play simple passes.

"Messi says, 'You're in a better position? Here, there you have the ball!' It's not always about making the most brilliant move, but the best and smartest. Florian can do that. That's why he's so good."
