Gary Lineker was blown away by Liverpool target Jamal Musiala in Germany’s World Cup opener against Japan.

Yesterday Japan's stunning comeback saw four-time World Cup winner Germany fall to a shock 2-1 defeat in the World Cup opener.

Germany dominated much of the game and went ahead in the first half through an İlkay Gündoğan penalty before Ritsu Doan equalised in the 73rd minute and Takuma Asano thumped in the winner moments later.

Despite the shock defeat, which sees Germany on the brink of another World Cup group stage exit, midfield starlet Musiala starred for Hansi Flick’s side.

Lineker impressed

Musiala, who was educated in London and qualifies for England, was central to Germany’s attacking play on his World Cup debut.

During the game, Lineker tweeted out his admiration for the 19-year-old.

The BBC host wrote: “What a gorgeous footballer Jamal Musiala is. Another player who will be a joy to watch for many a year.”

Lineker may have further opportunities to heap praise on the young midfielder if the Bayern Munich player makes a move to the Premier League as reported.

Liverpool interested

Bundesliga reporter Florian Plettenberg previously attributed Liverpool with interest in the midfielder.

However, he claimed that the Reds would face stiff competition from teams on the continent and that Musiala was currently happy at Bayern Munich.

In October the journalist tweeted: “Based on reports from the UK: Yes, Liverpool is interested in Musiala.

“Like any other top club in the world. But a transfer is no topic at this stage. He doesn’t want to leave Bayern and he is not for sale as mentioned by Salihamidzic at Sky.”

Musiala signed for Bayern in the summer of 2019 from Chelsea and has gone on to become central to Julian Nagelsmann’s team.

The youngster signed a new contract in March 2021 which keeps him in Munich until 2026.
