Liverpool plotting move for record-breaking wonderkid Mason Melia, he could turn out to be an absolute bargain

Liverpool plotting move for record-breaking wonderkid Mason Melia, he could turn out to be an absolute bargain

He's already broken records in the Republic of Ireland.

Liverpool already have a number of exciting young players at the club and they could be about to sign another.

With the likes of Harvey Elliott, Fabio Carvalho, Stefan Bajcetic, Ben Doak and Bobby Clark all featuring this season, the future certainly looks bright for the Reds – even if the current campaign has been something of a disappointment.

There is always a regular supply of talent from the club's academy and another player could be set to join this summer.

Football Insider claim Liverpool are closely monitoring Irish striker Mason Melia.

The 15-year-old, described as a 'wonderkid' in the report, has already made an impression in Irish senior football.

Earlier this season, he became both the youngest-ever player and goalscorer for his club St Patrick's Athletic, who play in the League of Ireland Premier Division – the top tier of football in the Republic of Ireland.

Last month, he caught the eye after becoming the club's youngest ever senior scorer with a strike against Wexford in the Leinster Senior Cup aged just 15 years and 132 days.

Liverpool 'keeping tabs' on Melia

His performances have attracted the attention of several Premier League clubs including Liverpool, who are 'keeping close tabs' on the youngster.

Liverpool's scouts are said to have delivered 'rave reviews' to the club's recruitment team but the Reds are expected to face competition for his signature.

Liverpool have a history of recruiting young talent from both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Trent Kone-Doherty joined from Northern Irish side Derry City last summer, while Caoimhin Kelleher has cemented his status as back-up goalkeeper to Alisson since joining from Ringmahon Rangers in 2015.

Premier League clubs regularly look to Ireland for potential bargains, with Republic of Ireland international Seamus Coleman perhaps the most famous example.

He joined Liverpool's rivals Everton from Irish club Sligo Rovers in 2009 for just £60,000, and has since gone on to make 406 appearances for the Toffees. Not a bad piece of business.
