Timo Werner is reportedly being eyed up by Liverpool this summer in spite of the German’s decision to join Chelsea over the Reds just 2 years ago.
According to Football Insider, the interest in Werner is tentative at this stage. No formal talks have taken place.
Werner has scored 10 goals in 56 games since moving Stamford Bridge from RB Leipzig in 2020.
While Werner has struggled at Chelsea, he is a player who would suit Liverpool well.
He offers searing pace, high quality pressing abilities, and versatility as he’d be able to play in any three of the positions across Klopp’s front three.
However, the West London side are already short up front with Romelu Lukaku set to return to Inter Milan on loan, and are therefore unlikely to be open to selling Werner
Even if they were, Chelsea would likely want to recoup the £50 million they spent on Werner two summers ago, which would be a tough figure for Liverpool to reach given the amount they have spent already this window.
The German is not the only forward the Reds have been linked with in recent days.
Liverpool are also believed to hold an interest in Marco Asensio.
According to Fabrizio Romano, if Liverpool are to move for the Spaniard, they’d wait until a few weeks of the new Premier League season have passed.
This is so Jürgen Klopp can assess whereabouts his Liverpool attack are in terms of quality.
If the likes of Darwin Nuñez and Fabio Carvalho acclimatise well, a further attacking addition is unlikely.
Thus, Liverpool’s interest in Werner will only formalise if Klopp comes to the decision he’d like a bit more squad depth in attacking areas next season.
This is another Liverpool transfer rumour which is probably not going to materialise into anything serious this summer.
