Pep Guardiola takes issue with the 'most awful sentence' about Man City in the title race

Pep Guardiola took issue with the 'most awful sentence' as he shared his thoughts on the Premier League title race.

Manchester City trail league leaders Arsenal by eight points, but the Blues have a game in hand as they resume their campaign against Liverpool.

Guardiola has steered his side to four of the last five Premier League titles, though insists the past experience counts for 'absolutely nothing'.

He conceded that the Gunners have a 'real advantage' over his team and bemoaned the 'most awful sentence' managers and players often say.

"The advantage is eight points in front of us, this is a real advantage," he said ahead of Man City's home fixture against Liverpool.

"The past is the past. Experience doesn’t count. Absolutely nothing. Sometimes managers and players say, 'I don’t have to show anything, I don’t have to demonstrate anything because of what I have done in the past'. It’s the most awful sentence, every time I hear players or managers thinking of that."

Guardiola reinforced his view on the past being the past, adding: "You have to prove it every single day, again and again and again. The past is the past. The memories when you are a grandfather, it’s okay, it’s nice. But the reality? The people come to the Etihad Stadium tomorrow at 12:30 don’t think about what we have done in the past.

"You have to show (it), you have to, again and again. Otherwise you have to retire."

Man City still face Arsenal in the title run-in and have a juggernaut clash against Bayern Munich in the Champion League as Guardiola looks to bag the club's first 'Big Ears' trophy.

Unlike Arsenal who are no longer involved in European competition this season following their defeat to Sporting CP.
